I designed this vest for my nephew Greg. It is made with black acrylic knitting worsted yarn. I used a moss stitch for the body and a 2x2 ribbing on all bands including the fold over collar.

Size: Child's 14

Materials:
400 gm of worsted weight yarn (50 g approx. = 100metres/110yards
Two 3.75 mm (US 5), two size 4.5 mm (US 7) and two size 5 mm (US 8) needles or size to obtain gauge, 18" zipper with silver teeth, darning needle, stitch holders.

Gauge: 20 stitches and 26 rows to 4"/10cm using size 4.5 mm (US 7) needles over pattern.

Finished measurements:
Chest 40"
Length 20"

Terms:

Instructions:

Special note: I have included 1 selvedge stitch on side seams of the back and front pieces. On either side of the zipper, I have included a 2 stitch garter edging.

Back:
With 3.75 mm needles , cast on 102 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K3, p2, *k2, p2, repeat from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: Knit the k sts and purl the p sts.
Repeat these 2 rows 3 more times. 8 rows
Change to 4.75 mm needles.
Row 1 (RS): K2, p1, *k1, p1, repeat from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: Knit the k sts and purl the p sts.
Row 3: K1, p1, *k1, p1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 4: Knit the k sts and purl the p sts.
Continue until piece measures 11" including ribbing, ending with a WS row.
Bind off 10 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.
Continue until piece measures 20" including ribbing, ending with a WS row. Bind off 24 sts, place center 34 sts on st holder, bind off last 24 sts.

Pocket Linings (make 2):
With 4.5 mm needles cast on 34 sts and work 5" in stockinette st, ending with a WS row. Leave these sts on a spare needle or place on st holder.

Left Front:
With 3.75 mm needles , cast on 51 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K3, p2, *k2, p2, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 2: K2, knit the k sts and purl the p sts.
Repeat these 2 rows 3 more times. 8 rows
Change to 4.5 mm needles.
Row 1 (RS): K2, p1, *k1, p1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 2: K2, knit the k sts and purl the p sts.
Row 3: K1, p1, *k1, p1, repeat from * to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 4: K2, knit the k sts and purl the p sts.
Continue until piece measures 6" including ribbing, ending with a WS row.
RS, following established pattern stitch for all of this row, work 9 sts, sl next 34 sts onto st holder, work across 34 sts from pocket lining, work to end.
Continue until piece measures 11" including ribbing, ending with a WS row.
RS, bind off 10 sts at beginning of this row.
Continue until piece measures 18" including ribbing, ending with a WS row.
RS, continue in established pattern st across row placing last 12 sts on st holder.
Decrease by 1 st at neck edge every row for next 5 rows.
Continue until piece measures 20" including ribbing, ending with a WS row.
Bind off 24 sts across shoulder.

Right Front:
With 3.75 mm needles , cast on 51 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K4, p2, *k2, p2, repeat from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: Knit the k sts and purl the p sts, end k2.
Repeat these 2 rows 3 more times. 8 rows
Change to 4.5 mm needles.
Row 1 (RS): K3, p1, *k1, p1, repeat from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: Knit the k sts and purl the p sts, end k2.
Row 3: K2, p1, *k1, p1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 4: Knit the k sts and purl the p sts, end k2.
Continue until piece measures 6" including ribbing, ending with a WS row.
RS, following established pattern stitch for all of this row, work 8 sts, sl next 34 sts onto st holder, work across 34 sts from pocket lining, work to end.
Continue until piece measures 11" including ribbing, ending with a RS row.
WS, bind off 10 sts at beginning of this row.
Continue until piece measures 18" including ribbing, ending with a RS row.
WS, continue in established pattern st across row placing last 12 sts on st holder.
Decrease by 1 st at neck edge every row for next 5 rows.
Continue until piece measures 20" including ribbing, ending with a WS row.
Bind off 24 sts across shoulder.

Pocket Borders:
With RS facing and 3.75 mm needles, work 2x2 ribbing across 34 sts from pocket st holder.
Row 1: *K2, p2, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 2: Knit the k sts and purl the p sts.
Repeat these 2 rows 3 more times. 8 rows
Knit 3 rows. Bind off loosely.
Sew Sides of pocket borders in position to right side and pocket lining in position to WS.

Finishing:
Seam shoulders.

Neck Edging:
With 3.75 mm needles pick up 12 sts from st holder (right front), 18 sts along right front edge, 34 sts from st holder (back), 18 sts along left front edge and 12 sts from st holder (left front).
Row 1: K4, p2, *k2, p2, repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 2: K2, knit the k sts and purl the p sts, end k2.
Repeat these 2 rows 4 more times.
Change to 4.5 mm needles. Repeat the above 2 rows 5 more times.
Change to 5 mm needles. Repeat the above 2 rows 3 more times.
Knit 3 rows. Bind off loosely.

Armhole edging:
With 3.75 mm needles, pick up 90 sts around armhole edging.
Row 1: K3, p2, *k2, p2, repeat from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: Knit the k sts and purl the p sts.
Repeat these 2 rows 3 more times. 8 rows
Bind off loosely in ribbing.

Finishing:
Seam sides. Sew in zipper from neck edge to bottom of ribbing. Weave in all ends.
